What to know about NOCO GENIUS1

A compact 1-amp smart charger and maintainer for 6V and 12V lead-acid (wet, gel, AGM) and LiFePO4 batteries. It is rated to charge batteries up to 30Ah and can maintain larger ones. It has temperature compensation and a Force mode. It is the cheapest widely recommended maintainer for motorcycles, mowers and ATVs, but it is too weak for car, truck or SUV batteries per The Drive.

At the lowest price in this guide, the GENIUS1 still offers 6V/12V, lead-acid plus LiFePO4, temperature compensation, Force mode and a 3-year warranty. Car and Driver, Road & Track, BestReviews, Autoweek and The Drive recommend it. Retailer spec tables rate it to charge up to 30Ah, while maintaining any size.

It ranks sixth on weighted score, but Best Value is a price-led award, and for a motorcycle or mower battery it does the job for very little money.

What to know

Skip it for car, truck or SUV batteries. The Drive calls it not powerful enough for them and reports it can time out after about three days, so check on it periodically. Its housing is rated IP60, so keep it out of splash zones. Car and Driver saw no visible activity from its thermal-sensor and desulfation features. Car or boat owners should step up to the GENIUS2 (2A, IP65) or the GENIUS5.
