The Best Air Purifiers for Pet Dander and Odor of 2026
Six purifiers that handle pet dander well, and the few that also have enough carbon to tackle litter-box and dog smells.
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Our editorial rankings are maintained separately from retailer relationships.
Dander and odor are two different problems. Dander is a particle, and a good HEPA filter with strong airflow handles it. Odor is a gas, and it takes a real amount of activated carbon to deal with it. Most popular purifiers are much better at the first job than the second.
That split shaped this guide. Several picks here are dander-first machines with modest carbon, and we say so. Others carry more carbon but cost more or run louder. We also note where an odor upgrade is sold separately.
Every pick below is matched to a room size and a pet situation, so you can choose by what your home actually needs.

Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N
The quietest strong dander cleaner for bedrooms, with no ionizer
Full product review →
The Coway Airmega Mighty2 is a standard-room option for buyers seeking a mechanical-filtration workflow.
Why we like it
HouseFresh measured about 151 cfm of PM1 cleaning at 42.6 dBA, the best quiet-speed result among mid-size units it tested. At top speed it measured 260 cfm, and sleep mode came in at 35.9 dBA. That is the combination that matters in a bedroom, where you want dander cleared without a fan roar.
Filtration is purely mechanical. A light-sensing auto Sleep mode and Quiet Mark certification add to the night-time appeal. HouseFresh also named it best for small spaces in its pet-odor guide.
What to know
Skip it if litter-box or dog odor is your main problem. The carbon is bonded into the main filter and, per HouseFresh, fills in about 6 to 9 months.
Pros
- Standard-room workflow
- Mechanical-filtration path
- Distinct exact-model corroborating sources
Cons
- Current ownership conditions require publication-time confirmation
- No cross-publisher quietness ranking is made

Winix 5530
Strong dander removal for medium and large rooms at a deal price
Full product review →
An app-connected Winix with a washable pre-filter, a carbon-pellet stage and True HEPA, rated for 392 sq ft.
Why we like it
RTINGS names it the best air purifier for pets for most people. It measured 258 cfm of PM1 cleaning at top speed, 122 cfm at its fastest speed under 45 dBA and 32.4 dBA at its lowest setting. These figures come from a single lab.
Both the pre-filter and the carbon are washable, which helps with ongoing cost. Winix says Sleep Mode turns PlasmaWave off, and that all its North American purifiers are CARB certified with ozone under 0.01 ppm.
What to know
Skip it if you need serious odor control, since RTINGS calls the carbon layer too thin. Also note that the value case depends on the current deal price; at list price the gap to the Mighty2 nearly disappears.
Pros
- Carbon-pellet filter for odors
- Switchable, CARB-certified ionizer
- App control
- Lower price
- Large coverage rating
Cons
- Loud at max, about 60.7 dBA
- Quiet-speed airflow less established
- Ionizer may re-enable after power loss on earlier models

Levoit EverestAir-P
Powerful, fairly quiet cleaning for open-plan homes with several pets
Full product review →
The Levoit EverestAir-P is a large-room option with exact-model RTINGS testing and a separate Consumer Reports test-program record.
Why we like it
HouseFresh measured 375 cfm of PM1 cleaning at top speed and 205 cfm below 45 dBA, the most quiet-speed cleaning of any pick here. Its 400 g of pelleted carbon is a meaningful amount for a unit of this type. HouseFresh named it best for large spaces in its pet-odor guide.
It ranks below the Winix on the page mainly because of its price and its large-room niche, even though the weighted scores are nearly level.
What to know
Skip it if you have a bedroom or budget in mind. Its 39.1 dBA minimum is the loudest floor among the main picks, and it is expensive to buy and run.
Pros
- Large-room buyer fit
- Exact-model evidence from distinct publisher groups
- Source-bounded lower-noise delivery evidence
Cons
- Quiet-setting evidence is not cross-publisher comparable
- Current ownership conditions are not assessed here

Levoit Core 400S-P
The best litter-box odor setup, once you add the Smoke Remover filter
Full product review →
A cylindrical smart purifier with a laser PM2.5 sensor and auto mode. It accepts a heavier-carbon Smoke Remover filter sold separately.
Why we like it
Bob Vila picked it best overall for pets, finding it among the fastest at clearing dander and hair and that it kept a litter area odor-free for a week. HouseFresh names it the best pet-odor pick under $200, but only with the roughly 450 g pelleted-carbon Smoke Remover filter.
HouseFresh measured 249 cfm of PM1 at top speed, 134 cfm under 45 dBA and 35.5 dBA in sleep. There is no ionizer.
What to know
The street price covers only the default filter. The Smoke Remover adds roughly $65, bringing the odor setup to about $255. Without it, the carbon is modest.
Pros
- Strong odor carbon with the Smoke Remover filter
- Quiet auto cleaning with a laser sensor
- 35.5 dBA in sleep
- App control
- No ionizer
Cons
- Odor setup costs about $255 in total
- Noisy at top speed, 60.3 dBA
- Filters need replacing about every 6 months

Levoit Core 300-P
The cheapest way in for one pet and a small bedroom
Full product review →
A compact, inexpensive Levoit cylinder with a three-stage filter and a sleep mode, listed as ozone-free with no ionizer.
Why we like it
RTINGS lists it as its budget pet pick and says it handles dander about as well as the Winix. Bob Vila picks it for small rooms, and Forbes Vetted also recommends it. It is the least expensive pick here, and replacement filters are cheap.
It works best as a simple, low-cost dander machine in a small bedroom.
What to know
This is a low-confidence budget option. There is no independent quiet-speed noise or CADR data, so its noise rating rests on Levoit's 24 dB spec. It has no sensor or auto mode, its default filter is not HEPA-rated, and it was slow in HouseFresh's room test at 54 minutes. Skip it for odor problems or large rooms.
Pros
- Budget price
- 37.1 dB in sleep mode
- No ionizer
- Compact
- Low running cost
Cons
- Low airflow
- Needs higher speeds to clean a 200 sq ft room
- No app
- Named in the Vesync filter settlement

Austin Air HealthMate HM400 (B400)
A heavy-carbon living-area unit for homes with multiple smelly pets
Full product review →
An all-steel purifier with about 15 lb of carbon and zeolite plus HEPA, and a filter rated for up to five years.
Why we like it
Its roughly 15 lb of granular carbon and zeolite dwarfs every other pick, which is why HouseFresh recommends it for homes with multiple smelly pets. The filter is rated for up to five years, and the housing is solid steel with no ionizer.
What to know
It is not a bedroom purifier. It measures 42.5 dBA even at its lowest speed and has no sleep mode. Particle CADR is low at 160 cfm PM1, it draws up to 148 W, and it costs $845. The Amazon seller is a third party, so consider buying direct from Austin Air.
Pros
- About 15 lb of carbon and zeolite
- Filter rated for up to 5 years
- All-steel construction
- No ionizer
Cons
- Loud at its lowest speed
- Low particle CADR for the price
- High power draw
- Very expensive, with no sleep mode or app

How we review air purifiers
PickMetric's picks come from research across independent lab tests, manufacturer spec sheets and owner feedback. We weighed measured particle cleaning (PM1 CADR) at both top speed and at speeds under about 45 dBA, since a purifier you turn down is a purifier that cleans less. We also looked at carbon quantity and format, washable pre-filters for pet hair, sleep features, ionizer and ozone status, and filter costs.
Scoring weights were noise at sleep speeds (30 percent), cleaning performance (20 percent), sleep features (15 percent), value (15 percent), health and materials (10 percent) and running cost (10 percent). Each pick was then challenged in a structured review before publication, and the lineup was revised based on that challenge.
How We Picked
We compared 13 products using independent lab measurements from HouseFresh and RTINGS, roundups from Bob Vila, Forbes Vetted and others, manufacturer spec sheets and owner feedback. The most important data points were PM1 cleaning at top speed and at speeds under about 45 dBA, the amount and format of carbon, and sleep-mode noise.
Each pick was then challenged before publication. That review changed the lineup in concrete ways. Because the top two picks are weak on odor, we added explicit odor caveats to both and lowered their cleaning scores. The Core 400S-P's odor award was tied to the Smoke Remover filter and its roughly $255 combined cost. Where a lab figure came from a single source, such as the Winix 5530, we say so, and the Winix's value case is tied to its current deal price.
The Vital 200S-P was reconsidered and left out because its quiet-speed performance and carbon trail the Core 400S-P.
What to Look For
Treat dander and odor separately
Dander is cleared by HEPA filtration and airflow. Odor needs a large mass of activated carbon. Check carbon weight, not just the word carbon. Thin carbon sheets or fabric do little for litter boxes or wet-dog smell.
Check cleaning at quiet speeds
Top-speed CADR is a poor guide to daily use. Look for cleaning measured at speeds under about 45 dBA, because that is where most people will actually run the unit.
Match the room size
A purifier rated for a large room will clean a small one faster, but a small unit in a big room will struggle. The Core 300-P suits about 219 sq ft, the Mighty2 about 390 sq ft, and the EverestAir-P over 500 sq ft.
Look for a washable pre-filter
A washable pre-filter catches pet hair before it reaches the main filter and extends its life.
Budget for filters
Carbon filters wear out. Some are spent in about 6 months, so factor in replacement cost. The Austin Air filter is rated for up to five years but costs a lot to replace.
Consider the ionizer
If you have a choice, a unit with no ionizer or one you can switch off is the simpler option.
Health, Materials & Safety
Ionizers and ozone. The Mighty2, EverestAir-P, Core 400S-P and Austin Air HealthMate have no ionizer. The Winix 5530 has a PlasmaWave feature that can be switched off, and Winix says Sleep Mode turns it off automatically. Winix also states that its North American purifiers are CARB certified with ozone under 0.01 ppm. Levoit lists CARB certification for the Core 400S-P and EverestAir-P.
HEPA labeling. Levoit and its parent company are subject to a proposed $15 million settlement over HEPA labeling for purchases made from 2019 through 2023, with no admission of wrongdoing. It covers Core units, including the Core 300, and the EverestAir. If this matters to you, the Coway, Winix and Austin Air picks sit outside it.
Energy use. The Mighty2 draws about 2.5 W in sleep mode, according to HouseFresh. The Austin Air HealthMate draws up to 148 W, the highest of the group. The Core 400S-P is Energy Star listed.
Other Air Purifiers for Pet Dander and Odor We Considered
Levoit Vital 200S-P: Its quiet-speed PM1 cleaning (128 cfm) and 38.3 dBA floor trail the Core 400S-P, and its bonded carbon is spent in about 6 months with no high-carbon upgrade. It is a close alternative if its price falls.
Levoit Vital Pet Pro: RTINGS found much weaker particle cleaning than the Winix 5530, and its 6-month filter interval raises running cost.
Levoit Core 300S-P: Its carbon is insufficient for odors and it costs more than the Core 300-P for a similar budget role.
Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max and 311i+ Max: The ionizer is always on, and the fabric carbon is weak for odors.
Alen BreatheSmart 75i: Unavailable at major retailers when we checked, and it is expensive, with costly filters.
Coway Airmega 200M: It has a bipolar ionizer with no stated off control, no sleep mode and no independent performance data.
FAQ
Do air purifiers remove pet dander?
Yes. A HEPA purifier with enough airflow for the room captures airborne dander. It will not remove dander that has settled on furniture and floors, so regular cleaning still matters.
Can an air purifier get rid of litter-box smell?
Only if it has a large amount of carbon. The Core 400S-P with the Smoke Remover filter and the Austin Air HealthMate are the strongest options here. The Mighty2 and Winix 5530 help only with light odors.
How often do I replace the filters?
It varies. The Core 400S-P filters are on a roughly 6-month schedule, the Mighty2 and EverestAir-P about 12 months, and the Austin Air filter is rated for up to 5 years. Heavy odor can use carbon up sooner.
Which one is best for a bedroom?
The Coway Airmega Mighty2 offers the best combination of quiet-speed cleaning and low sleep-mode noise. The Core 400S-P is a good choice if odor also matters.
Is the Winix 5530 PlasmaWave safe for pets?
PlasmaWave can be turned off, and Winix says Sleep Mode disables it. If you would rather avoid it, leave it off.
Is the Austin Air HealthMate worth the money?
Only for heavy, persistent odor in a living area. It is loud, power-hungry and expensive, so most households are better served by a cheaper unit.
Bottom line
For most pet owners, the Coway Airmega Mighty2 is the best place to start: quiet, strong on dander and free of an ionizer. The Winix 5530 is the smarter buy if you want similar cleaning for less and catch it at a deal price. If odor is the main complaint, put the Levoit Core 400S-P with the Smoke Remover filter at the top of your list, and consider the Austin Air HealthMate for a living area with several smelly pets. Whatever you choose, size it to the room and keep up with the filters.
