A heated throw is the easy way to stay warm on the couch without turning up the thermostat. It plugs in, warms up in a few minutes and drapes over your lap and legs. Most are 50x60 inches, and they differ a lot in softness, how much of the surface actually heats, and how long they stay on.
We compared 17 heated throws and narrowed them to six. The picks cover a large mainstream throw, a battery-powered cordless option, a thick plush model, a soft fleece, a foot-pocket design and a budget flannel.
No throw is perfect. Several have short auto shut-offs, and testers often noted that wires can be felt. Each pick below lists who it suits and who should skip it.

Beautyrest Zuri Oversized Faux Fur Heated Throw (BR54 series)
A big 50x70 throw with UL listing and a 5-year warranty at a low price
Full product review →
An oversized faux-fur-to-mink heated throw with three heat settings and a corner plug. It's machine washable and listed as UL certified.
Why we like it
Yahoo named it its best heated throw and measured about 99, 108 and 111°F on low, medium and high over a 26x55-inch heated zone. Reviewed named it its best design pick, noting it warms in two to three minutes and that the corner plug suits lounging.
At 50x70 it's larger than most rivals, so it covers a person stretched out on a couch. It's priced below the smaller Sunbeam throws, and retailers list a 5-year warranty.
What to know
Skip it if you want a long timer or soft, wire-free feel. The 2-hour shut-off is fixed, and TechGearLab rated comfort and wire feel 5 out of 10.
Pros
- Large 50x70 size
- UL listed per the Amazon title
- Low price for the size
- 5-year warranty listed by retailers
- Machine washable
Cons
- Fixed 2-hour auto shut-off

ActionHeat AH-BLKTP-7V (7V Battery Heated Plush Throw, Taupe)
The only cordless pick, with no mains AC running through the blanket
Full product review →
A 50x60 plush throw with sherpa lining, powered by an included 7V battery pack. It has three heat levels.
Why we like it
The 7V DC battery means no 120V wall current runs through the blanket. That's the most structural way to cut electric fields near the body in this group, though ActionHeat publishes no field measurements. It also lets you use the throw anywhere, with no cord to trip over.
The maker lists three levels with roughly 2.5, 4 and 6.5 hours of runtime. Taste of Home named the brand its best battery-operated blanket.
What to know
Skip it if you want long high-heat sessions or a bargain. Runtime on high is limited, the price is premium, and the product page lists a 1-year warranty and no product-specific safety listing. Stock can be intermittent, so check availability before you plan around it.
Pros
- No mains AC in the blanket
- Cordless use anywhere
- Plush fabric with sherpa lining
- Replacement battery available
- Machine washable with battery removed
Cons
- Premium price
- Limited runtime on high
- No product-specific safety listing found
- Battery must be removed to wash; air dry

Thick, reversible and good at hiding its wires
Full product review →
A reversible microplush and sherpa 50x60 throw with four heat settings and a 4-hour auto-off. It's from the most widely tested mainstream line.
Why we like it
Reviewed named it its best overall heated blanket. Testers praised the thick fabric that hides the wires, the distinct settings, and the fact that it never got uncomfortably hot. It's washable and can be dried on low.
TechGearLab found a related Royal Mink throw evenly heated.
What to know
Skip it if you want the most blanket for the money. It costs more than the larger Zuri, the cord is short, and the auto-off can't be changed.

- Thick plush and sherpa sides
- Four distinct settings
- 4-hour auto shut-off
- Hides wires well
- Machine washable
Cons
- Short power cord
- Wires can still be felt

The softest throw in independent testing
Full product review →
A reversible fleece and sherpa 50x60 throw with five heat settings and a 4-hour auto-off. It's ETL listed.
Why we like it
TechGearLab's top-scoring throw gave the Serta 83 overall and 9 out of 10 for comfort. The tested unit was the same five-setting build in a different color.
Five settings give finer control than most throws, and it's machine washable.
What to know
Skip it if you need even heat across the whole blanket. Your Best Digs found a Serta sherpa throw heated only a small center square, and TechGearLab noted it's smaller than some rivals.
Pros
- Top comfort score at TechGearLab
- Five heat settings
- ETL listed
- Reversible fleece and sherpa
- Machine washable
Cons
- Fixed 4-hour auto-off
- Smaller than some rivals

A built-in foot pocket for people with cold feet
Full product review →
A fluffy 50x60 sherpa throw with a foot pocket, four heat settings and a 4-hour auto-off.
Why we like it
Yahoo's best fleece pick measured about 95 to 111°F with even heat over a 28x52-inch zone. The foot pocket keeps your toes warm while you read or watch TV.
The Amazon listing confirms 50x60 size, four settings and a 4-hour shut-off.

- Even heat in Yahoo's test
- Four settings
- 4-hour auto-off
- cETLus listing per Yahoo
Cons
- Only partly machine dryable

A basic, certified flannel throw for under the price of most rivals
Full product review →
A two-layer flannel 50x60 throw with three heat levels, a 4-hour auto-off and a detachable controller.
Why we like it
It's the budget pick at Reviewed and NBC Select, and Your Best Digs' best new throw, reaching about 105°F on high. Tefici lists ETL and FCC certification and PTC and NTC overheat protection.
It's the lowest-priced pick here and the controller detaches for washing.
What to know
Skip it if you want plush softness or full coverage. Testers found it thin, with palpable coils and wide unheated borders. It's sold by a third-party seller, and Your Best Digs' testing dates from 2022.

- ETL and FCC listed by the maker
- Overheat protection
- Detachable controller
- 4-hour auto-off

How we review heated blankets
PickMetric's picks come from research across independent tests, manufacturer specs and owner feedback. Sources included Reviewed, TechGearLab, Yahoo Shopping, Taste of Home, NBC Select, Your Best Digs, Bob Vila and CNN Underscored, along with CPSC recall records and retailer listings. We did not run our own hands-on tests.
We scored each throw on six criteria: EMF reduction (25 percent), warmth and heat control (20 percent), health and materials, electrical safety and reliability, and value (15 percent each), and comfort and washability (10 percent). Each pick was then challenged in a structured review before publication, and scores were revised where evidence was thin.
How We Picked
We started with 17 candidates and gathered evidence from independent tests at Reviewed, TechGearLab, Yahoo Shopping, Taste of Home, NBC Select and Your Best Digs, plus manufacturer specs, retailer listings, owner feedback and CPSC recall records.
Each throw was scored on EMF reduction, warmth and heat control, health and materials, electrical safety, comfort and washability, and value. Every pick was then challenged before publication.
That review changed the lineup. A Sunbeam throw was dropped because its top-pick claim could not be traced to a readable source, and a Beautyrest Microlight throw was removed because the tested unit didn't match any current listing. The review also cut scores for the Zuri's unmeasured EMF claim and re-ranked Best Value toward the budget Tefici based on live prices.
What to Look For
Size and heated zone
Most throws are 50x60. The heated area is smaller than the blanket, and testers measured zones as small as 26x55 inches on a 50x70 throw. Wide unheated borders matter if you want coverage.
Auto shut-off
Shut-offs here range from 2 to 4 hours, and most can't be changed. If you doze on the couch, a longer timer is convenient. A shorter one is safer if you forget to turn it off.
Settings and feel
Three to five settings is typical. Thick plush or sherpa hides wires better than thin flannel.
Safety listing and warranty
Look for a UL or ETL mark, overheat protection and a clear warranty. Replace any throw with damage, scorch marks or a frayed cord.
Washing
Most are machine washable, but several can be only partly dried in a machine. Detach the controller or battery first.
Health, Materials & Safety
Every pick except ActionHeat runs on standard 120V AC. ActionHeat's 7V battery design keeps mains current out of the blanket, though the maker publishes no field measurements. Beautyrest describes the Zuri as virtually zero EMF, but that is a marketing claim without a published method.
Retailers list OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the Zuri under a certificate shared across many Beautyrest throws. The other picks are polyester and make no textile certification claim.
One budget alternative, the Bedsure heated throw, was left out partly because of a 2023 CPSC recall of about 350,000 units over fire and burn hazards. Check recall notices for any heated blanket you buy, and follow the maker's care and use instructions.
Other Heated Throw Blankets We Considered
Sunbeam Royal Ultra: Yahoo found it the thinnest in its group, with faintly visible wires and lint.
Bedsure heated throw: a 2023 CPSC recall, a small heated area in Yahoo's test, and many near-identical listings.
Woomer faux fur throw: dye transfer reported by TechGearLab, cold spots reported by Bob Vila, and no textile certification.
Sunbeam LoftTec foot pocket throw: out of stock, and CNN Underscored found inconsistent heat.
Beautyrest Microlight Berber: Taste of Home measured only about 95°F at the center with a roughly one-foot unheated border.
Brookstone, Westinghouse, Vremi and HomeMate throws: left out for stock problems, unverifiable listings or mixed test results. Pure Enrichment PureRelief was left out for lack of independent tests and a short timer.
FAQ
Are heated throws safe to use?
Modern throws have overheat protection and auto shut-off, and the picks here carry UL or ETL listings per retailer or maker information. Inspect for damage, don't fold them while on, and replace any that look worn.
Can I wash a heated throw?
Most can be machine washed after you detach the controller. Some can only be partly machine dried, and the battery-powered ActionHeat should be air dried.
How long do they take to heat up?
Reviewers found the Zuri warm in two to three minutes. Most throws feel warm within about 10 minutes.
Do any heated throws have low EMF?
The ActionHeat battery throw avoids mains AC in the blanket by design. Beautyrest claims virtually zero EMF for the Zuri, but we found no published measurements.
What size should I get?
A 50x60 throw suits a lap or sitting. If you stretch out on a couch, the 50x70 Zuri gives more coverage.
Do they cost much to run?
Heated throws draw modest power compared with a space heater, so they are an inexpensive way to feel warmer in one spot.
Bottom line
For most people, the Beautyrest Zuri is the best heated throw: it's large, UL-listed, backed by a 5-year warranty and priced low. If you want to remove mains AC from the blanket, the ActionHeat battery throw is the only design that does it, at a much higher price. The Sunbeam Royal Mink Sherpa suits buyers who want thickness, Serta suits those who want softness, the Sunbeam foot-pocket throw suits cold feet, and Tefici is the budget choice. Whichever you buy, check the auto shut-off and never use a throw that looks damaged.
