Slow Cookers

The Best Non-Toxic, Lead-Free Slow Cookers of 2026

Uncoated stainless steel with independent lead testing leads this list, followed by coated options for buyers who want a dedicated slow cooker.

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Our editorial rankings are maintained separately from retailer relationships.

Most slow cookers use a glazed stoneware crock, and glazed ceramic is where past trace-lead findings have turned up. If you want to cook for hours at low heat in a pot you feel good about, the material of the food-contact surface matters more than the brand name or the number of presets.

This guide looks at the options you can buy today from major US retailers. Three of our five picks use an uncoated 18/8 stainless steel pot, so there is no coating to chip or wear. The other two use a ceramic nonstick coating on an aluminum pot, and the maker states it is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium.

One thing to know up front: the independent lead evidence here is thin. The only third-party food-contact result behind our stainless picks is a 2022 Lead Safe Mama XRF test of an Instant Pot stainless insert. It is a brand-level result, not a test of each model listed. We say so wherever it applies.

#1 Best Overall

Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 6 Quart (IP-DUO60)

Uncoated stainless, independently lead-tested insert type, mainstream price

Full product review →
7.5 /10
Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker 6 Quart
Lowest verified price $83.47 at Amazon

A best-selling 6-quart multicooker with an uncoated 18/8 stainless steel inner pot. It offers slow-cook, pressure, sauté, rice and yogurt modes plus a programmable timer.

Why we like it

Lead Safe Mama's 2022 XRF test of an Instant Pot stainless insert found no detectable lead or cadmium, including on the markings. That is the strongest independent food-contact evidence among the cookers we could recommend. The pot is plain stainless with no coating, so nothing wears off into food over time.

It also cooks well enough for the job. TechGearLab named the Duo Most Versatile and found its low setting came closest to the ideal 190 to 200°F range. Amazon sells it directly, and it is the least expensive of our stainless picks.

What to know

Skip it if you want a wide, shallow crock for roasts. TechGearLab noted the tall, narrow pot meant meat did not always fall apart. The lead test covered an Instant Pot insert, not a current Duo specifically.

Pros

  • Uncoated 18/8 stainless pot with no coating to wear
  • Independent XRF non-detect for lead and cadmium on an Instant Pot stainless insert
  • Closest low-setting temperature to the ideal range in TechGearLab's testing
  • Dishwasher-safe insert and programmable timer
  • Replacement stainless pots sold separately

Cons

  • Lead test was brand-level, not of this exact model
  • Tall, narrow pot; meat did not always fall apart in testing
  • Silicone sealing ring can hold odors
  • Stainless contains about 8% nickel

#2 Best Stainless with Pot Handles

Instant Pot Pro 10-in-1 6 Quart (112-0123-01)

The Duo's stainless pot, with grip handles and more power

Full product review →
7.5 /10
Instant Pot Pro 10-in-1 Pressure Cooker 6 Quart
Lowest verified price $169.99 at Amazon

A 10-in-1 6-quart multicooker with a dishwasher-safe, uncoated stainless inner pot that has grip handles. It runs at 1200 W and includes a slow-cook mode.

Why we like it

Instant Brands lists the Pro's inner pot as stainless with no food-contact coating, which puts it in the same material class as the Duo. The grip handles make it easier to lift and to hold steady while sautéing, and it has more wattage than the Duo.

Its lead evidence is the same brand-level 2022 Lead Safe Mama non-detect on an Instant Pot stainless insert. The Pro itself has not been tested. It ranks above the coated picks because an uncoated stainless surface beats a coating that rests on a manufacturer claim.

What to know

Skip it unless you specifically want the handles. It costs noticeably more than the Duo, we found no independent slow-cook test, and the warranty is one year.

Pros

  • Uncoated stainless inner pot with grip handles
  • Dishwasher-safe pot
  • 1200 W of power
  • Ten functions including slow cook
  • Sold by Amazon and Target

Cons

  • Mid-to-premium price, well above the Duo
  • No independent slow-cook test found
  • No model-specific lead test
  • Uncoated pot can stick
  • One-year limited warranty

#3 Best Multicooker Step-Up

Instant Pot Duo Plus 9-in-1 6 Quart (WhisperQuiet)

A quieter Duo with extra programs on the same stainless pot

Full product review →
7.6 /10
Instant Pot Duo Plus 9-in-1 6 Quart WhisperQuiet Electric Pressure Cooker
Lowest verified price $89.99 at Amazon

A 9-in-1 6-quart multicooker with an uncoated 18/8 (304) stainless inner pot and tri-ply bottom. It adds a WhisperQuiet steam release plus sterilize and egg programs.

Why we like it

Instant Brands support describes the inner pot as uncoated 18/8 stainless with a tri-ply bottom, the same insert type that tested non-detect for lead and cadmium in Lead Safe Mama's 2022 XRF test. That test was brand-level, and this model was not tested itself.

It keeps the Duo's slow cook, sauté and keep-warm functions and adds the quieter steam release. Buy the current WhisperQuiet listing; the older listing is out of stock.

What to know

Skip it if you only need slow cooking. It uses the Duo's tall, narrow pot, so you pay extra for features that do not change how a braise turns out.

Pros

  • Uncoated stainless pot with tri-ply bottom
  • WhisperQuiet steam release
  • Extra programs such as sterilize and egg
  • Dishwasher-safe insert and programmable timer
  • Sold directly by Amazon

Cons

  • No model-specific lead test
  • No independent slow-cook test
  • One owner reported pitting on the pot after cleaning
  • An optional nonstick pot is sold separately; avoid it for a coating-free setup

#4 Best Budget Glaze-Free (Claims Only)

GreenLife Healthy Ceramic Nonstick 6QT Slow Cooker (Black, CC004773-001)

The cheapest in-stock way to skip glazed stoneware

Full product review →
6.1 /10
GreenLife 6 Quart Programmable Slow Cooker, Ceramic Nonstick
Lowest verified price $52.99 at Amazon

A programmable 6-quart slow cooker with a removable ceramic-coated aluminum pot and glass lid. It has delay start and keep-warm.

Why we like it

The pot is ceramic-coated aluminum rather than glazed stoneware, which sidesteps the material behind past trace-lead findings in slow cooker crocks. The Amazon page calls the crock a PFAS-free nonstick ceramic, and GreenLife's copy on Target says the coating is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium.

The pot can go on the cooktop and in the oven, so you can sear and then slow cook in the same vessel. It is the least expensive pick here and sold by Amazon.

What to know

Skip it if you need independent proof. No lab test or professional review backs the claims. The lead and cadmium wording appears on Target's listing for a different colorway than the black model.

Pros

  • Budget price
  • Ceramic coating rather than glazed stoneware
  • Manufacturer states the coating is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium
  • Pot is stovetop and oven safe
  • Delay start and keep-warm

Cons

  • Safety claims come from the manufacturer only
  • Coating loses release with abrasive cleaning or metal tools
  • Model numbers vary by color
  • No professional review

#5 Best for Browning in the Pot

GreenPan Elite 14-in-1 6-Quart Slow Cooker (Black, NCCC009985-001)

Sear and slow cook in one ceramic-coated pot, at a premium

Full product review →
6.1 /10
GreenPan Elite 14-in-1 6QT Electric Slow Cooker, PFAS-Free Ceramic Nonstick
Lowest verified price $299.99 at Amazon

A 14-in-1 programmable 6-quart cooker with a hard-anodized aluminum pot coated in Thermolon Volt ceramic. It browns in the pot and includes a stainless steamer.

Why we like it

GreenPan says the Thermolon Volt coating is free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium, with the PFAS statement footnoted as made without intentionally added PFAS. It is a manufacturer claim, with no third-party test cited.

The appeal is convenience. In-pot browning, 14 modes, a timer and dishwasher-safe parts mean less washing than a separate skillet and slow cooker. Homes & Gardens and America's Test Kitchen both covered the Elite line.

What to know

Skip it if safety evidence or price is your priority. America's Test Kitchen rated a different Elite model only Recommended with Reservations, and Amazon's price runs above the typical level.

Pros

  • In-pot browning on a stovetop-safe pot
  • 14 modes and a programmable timer
  • Dishwasher-safe pot and lid
  • Coating claimed free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium
  • Includes a stainless steamer

Cons

  • Claims only; no independent lead test
  • Premium price, currently above typical
  • Very short power cable, per Homes & Gardens
  • Ceramic coating loses release over time
  • Several Elite SKUs exist

Our process

How we review slow cookers

PickMetric compares products by researching independent tests, manufacturer specifications and owner feedback, then putting every pick through a structured review where the lineup is challenged before publication. We did not run our own kitchen tests. Sources included America's Test Kitchen, TechGearLab, Food Network, Homes & Gardens, Reviewed, Lead Safe Mama's XRF lead testing, and manufacturer and retailer pages.

Six criteria drove the scores. Lead and cadmium evidence (25%) and slow-cooking performance (25%) count most, because the focus is lead-free cooking and a cooker still has to cook well. Coating and materials safety (15%) and value (15%) come next. Ease of use and cleaning (10%) and durability and repairability (10%) round it out. Independent non-detect results on food-contact parts score highest, then uncoated stainless or glass with no contrary findings, then manufacturer claims alone.

How We Picked

We started with 13 products and researched each one across independent reviews from America's Test Kitchen, TechGearLab, Food Network, Homes & Gardens and Reviewed, lead testing from Lead Safe Mama, manufacturer specifications and retailer listings. Each was scored on lead and cadmium evidence, slow-cooking performance, materials safety, ease of use, durability and value.

Every pick was then challenged before publication, and the review changed the lineup. A premium stainless-pot cooker from 360 Cookware was dropped because it is sold out and has no major retailer listing. The Instant Pot Pro was added as a buyable second stainless option, with its lead evidence labeled as brand-level and its value score cut because of the price gap with the Duo. The GreenLife's award was renamed to make clear that its safety case rests on manufacturer claims, and the GreenPan's slow-cooking score was lowered because America's Test Kitchen reviewed a different model.

The result is a short list. Only one type of independent evidence exists for the buyable picks, and we have tried to state that plainly.

What to Look For

The food-contact material

The pot and lid are what touch your food for hours. Uncoated stainless steel or glass has no coating to wear, and stainless is the easiest to verify. Glazed stoneware is the most common slow cooker crock, and an XRF test of one Crock-Pot liner found lead, so it is the material to be most careful about.

Independent testing versus claims

An independent XRF or lab result on a food-contact part is worth more than a manufacturer statement. Check whether a test covered your exact model or just the brand's pot type.

Coatings

Ceramic nonstick coatings are sold as PFAS-free alternatives to PTFE. They lose slickness over time, especially with metal utensils, abrasive scrubbing or high heat. If you choose one, use wood or silicone tools and hand wash gently.

Temperature and pot shape

A slow cooker needs a steady low setting. Tall, narrow pots, like the Instant Pot's, can leave some cuts less tender than a wide crock. Look for a programmable timer and automatic keep-warm.

Cleaning and parts

A dishwasher-safe insert saves effort. Check that replacement pots and sealing rings are sold, since silicone rings can hold odors.

Health, Materials & Safety

Stainless steel

The Instant Pot picks use 18/8 (304) stainless, which contains nickel. Lead Safe Mama's 2022 XRF test of an Instant Pot stainless insert found no lead or cadmium and about 8% nickel. Most people cook in stainless without issue, but anyone with a nickel sensitivity should consider that.

Parts that do not touch food

The same Lead Safe Mama research found lead in the heating element of a 2018 Instant Pot unit. That part sits in the base and does not touch food, but it is a reason not to read the pot test as covering the whole appliance.

Silicone

Pressure-cooker multicookers use a silicone sealing ring that touches food vapor and can hold odors. Replacement rings are inexpensive.

Ceramic coatings and PFAS

GreenLife and GreenPan state that their ceramic coatings are free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium. GreenPan footnotes its claim as made without intentionally added PFAS. Neither company cites a third-party test for these slow cookers. These coatings also wear faster than bare stainless.

Unglazed clay

VitaClay, a common unglazed-clay option, tested very high for lead in a 2018 Lead Safe Mama XRF test, so we did not include it.

Other Non-Toxic, Lead-Free Slow Cookers We Considered

360 Cookware 4-Quart Slow Cooker Set: its pot tested lead-free in a Lead Safe Mama XRF test, but it is sold out on the maker's site with no major US retailer listing. We will reconsider it when stock returns.

Magnifique Glass Pot Multi-Cooker: out of stock on Amazon, with no lab test or independent review, and the glass pot cannot sear.

Our Place Dream Cooker: the maker says only toxin-free ceramic nonstick, with no PFAS, lead or cadmium statement. Reviewed found quick coating wear, and the Amazon seller is a third party.

Breville Fast Slow Pro: claims only PFOA and PTFE-free, not PFAS-free, is expensive, and has reports of failures around the warranty mark.

All-Clad 6-in-1 Cast Iron Slow Cooker: no lead or cadmium statement for the enamel, and the rim is unenameled.

GreenPan 8-Quart Locking Lid Slow Cooker: no confirmed Amazon listing, inconsistent pricing and no independent tests.

Crock-Pot SCV700-SS 7-Quart: glazed stoneware, with 42 ppm lead found in an XRF test of a Crock-Pot liner, and the lowest score in TechGearLab's testing.

Hamilton Beach Temp Tracker: a strong performer, but the glazed crock has no independent lead test and the company claims only FDA compliance.

FAQ

Are Instant Pots lead-free?

Lead Safe Mama's 2022 XRF test of an Instant Pot stainless insert found no detectable lead or cadmium. That was a brand-level test, not of each model. The same research found lead in the heating element of a 2018 unit, which does not touch food.

Is a ceramic-coated slow cooker safer than stoneware?

It avoids glazed stoneware, where trace lead has been found. The GreenLife and GreenPan coatings are claimed free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium, but we found no independent tests. Uncoated stainless has the stronger evidence.

Does a stainless steel pot slow cook as well as a crock?

It works, but the shape differs. TechGearLab found the Duo's low setting close to the ideal temperature, though meat did not always fall apart in its tall, narrow pot.

How do I make a ceramic coating last?

Avoid metal utensils, abrasive scrubbers and high heat. Wash gently. Ceramic nonstick coatings lose release over time regardless of brand.

Which Instant Pot should I buy for slow cooking?

The Duo is the best value. Choose the Pro for pot handles or the Duo Plus for quieter steam release and extra programs. All use uncoated stainless pots. Avoid the optional nonstick pot if you want to skip coatings.

Bottom line

For most shoppers, the Instant Pot Duo is the safest bet: an uncoated stainless pot, an independent non-detect on that type of insert, real slow-cook capability and a mainstream price. Step up to the Pro or Duo Plus only if the handles or the extra programs matter to you. If you want a dedicated slow cooker with a lighter, ceramic-coated pot, the GreenLife is the budget route and the GreenPan Elite is the premium one, but both rest on manufacturer claims rather than lab results. We will update this guide as more uncoated or glass slow cookers become available and independently tested.
