What to know about Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 6 Quart (IP-DUO60)

The best-selling 6-quart multicooker, with an uncoated 18/8 stainless inner pot and slow-cook, pressure, sauté, rice and yogurt modes. TechGearLab named it Most Versatile, and its low slow-cook setting came closest to the ideal temperature.
Editorial notes

Why it stands out

Why we like it

Lead Safe Mama's 2022 XRF test of an Instant Pot stainless insert found no detectable lead or cadmium, including on the markings. That is the strongest independent food-contact evidence among the cookers we could recommend. The pot is plain stainless with no coating, so nothing wears off into food over time.

It also cooks well enough for the job. TechGearLab named the Duo Most Versatile and found its low setting came closest to the ideal 190 to 200°F range. Amazon sells it directly, and it is the least expensive of our stainless picks.

What to know

Skip it if you want a wide, shallow crock for roasts. TechGearLab noted the tall, narrow pot meant meat did not always fall apart. The lead test covered an Instant Pot insert, not a current Duo specifically.
Performance

Score breakdown

Lead/Cadmium Evidence

Strength of evidence that the parts touching food are free of lead and cadmium. Independent XRF or lab non-detects on food-contact parts score highest, then uncoated stainless or glass with no contrary findings, then manufacturer claims only. Glazed stoneware with past trace-lead findings scores lowest.

8.0
XRF found no lead or cadmium on a 2022 Instant Pot insert (brand-level, not this exact unit). A 2018 unit's heating element, which doesn't touch food, read 617 ppm lead.
Cooking performance

Pressure-cooking results in independent tests (beans, stew, rice), searing/sauté heat, preheat time, and slow-cook ability

7.3
ATK: good pressure cooking and browns well; slow cook struggled. Reviewed: slow to pressurize
Rice Quality

How evenly and consistently it cooks white and brown rice in owner and tester reports, including scorching or a crust at the bottom of an uncoated pot.

5.5
Prudent Reviews found an uneven white-rice batch; Tom's Guide favors dedicated cookers for consistency.
Coating & Materials Safety

Food-contact chemistry beyond lead: no PTFE or PFAS (explicit PFAS-free claim vs. PFOA-free only), how well coatings hold up and whether they flake, plastic or silicone parts touching food, and nickel in stainless.

8.0
Uncoated 304 stainless with about 8% nickel. The silicone sealing ring touches food.
Ease of use

Clarity of the control panel, how easy the lid is to fit, steam-release safety and noise, and how easy it is to clean

7.0
Busy panel and auto-start (ATK); lid can be hard to lock (Food Network)
Health & Materials

Food-contact surface (uncoated 304/316L or clad stainless vs any coating), how clearly the maker discloses materials, plastic/silicone parts touching food or steam, Prop 65 or lead findings, and PFAS disclosures.

6.5
18/8 tri-ply pot, but the silicone ring touches steam and food, the PTFE/PFA/FEP disclosure is vague, and the XRF data is from a different unit.
Slow-Cooking Performance

Even, reliable low and high temperatures and tender braises, as measured by independent testers (ATK, TechGearLab, Food Network, Reviewed), plus extras like browning in the pot, a probe or a timer.

7.0
TechGearLab measured accurate low temperatures, but meat didn't always fall apart and the pot is narrow.
Pot & build quality

Stainless pot construction (tri-ply bottom or full tri-ply), handles and anti-spin, sturdiness, parts availability

7.4
18/8 pot with tri-ply bottom; no handles
Sticking & Cleanup

6.5
Dishwasher-safe pot, but rice sticks and needs soaking (Prudent Reviews); lid, ring and valve need cleaning.
Ease of Use & Cleaning

Clear controls, programmable timer and auto-warm, dishwasher-safe insert, pot weight and handles, and how well the lid fits.

8.0
Has a timer and auto-warm, and the pot is dishwasher-safe. The pot has no handles.

Durability & Repairability

Build quality, warranty length, owner reports of failures or coating wear, and whether replacement inserts or parts are sold.

8.0
The uncoated pot doesn't wear out, and replacement pots and rings are sold.
