The Best Space Heaters for Large Rooms of 2026
Five plug-in heaters that warm big living rooms and bedrooms well, with honest limits on what a 1,500-watt unit can do.
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Our editorial rankings are maintained separately from retailer relationships.
A large room is hard on a portable heater. Every standard plug-in model tops out at 1,500 watts, or about 5,100 BTU/h, so the real question is which one uses that output best: how fast it lifts the temperature, how evenly it spreads heat, and whether you can live with it overnight.
This guide ranks five heaters on that basis. As an editorial rule of thumb, not a tested or rated figure, a 1,500 W heater suits an enclosed room of roughly 250 to 400 square feet. In a bigger, open-plan or drafty space, treat any of these as supplemental heat alongside your central system.
The lineup covers a lab-tested whole-room fan heater, a silent oil-filled radiator, a remote-equipped oscillating tower, a quiet budget vortex heater and a light, portable ceramic model.

Vornado AVH10 (2026)
The largest room warm-up in TechGearLab's 10-heater test, with the coolest safety result
Full product review →
A vortex heater with push-button digital controls and Auto Climate, which Vornado says adjusts fan and heat output to hold your set temperature.
Why we like it
In TechGearLab's lab test the AVH10 produced the largest average room temperature rise of the 10 heaters, 6.3°F, ahead of the Dyson AM09 at 6.0°F and the Dr. Infrared DR-968 at 5.4°F. It also earned the highest consistent-warmth score. Vortex circulation moves warm air through the whole room instead of heating one spot.
In the covered-heater test it shut off in about 10 seconds and the sheet reached only 120°F, the coolest result. Auto Climate holds your set temperature without constant adjustment. Reviewed and CNN Underscored also recommend it.
What to know
Skip it if you need a remote or timer (this model has neither), or if you plan to heat a drafty garage or workshop.
Pros
- Digital Auto Climate control
- 44 dB maximum measured by Reviewed
- Tip-over and overheat shutoff
- Cool-touch case
- 5-year guarantee
Cons
- No remote or timer
- Costs more than the VH10
- Spot heating less intense than infrared models
- Noise evidence comes from one test source

De'Longhi Dragon Digital TRD40615E / TRD40615EBK
A fanless oil-filled radiator that is virtually silent for large bedrooms
Full product review →
A 1,500 W oil-filled radiator with three power levels, ECO mode, a 24-hour timer and a child lock. With no fan, it moves no air.
Why we like it
Bob Vila's testers found it virtually silent apart from occasional thermostat clicks. It gave steady heat and dried the air less than the other heaters they tested. With no fan, it does not blow dust or dander around, according to De'Longhi.
The digital thermostat and 24-hour timer let you schedule heat for bedtime or the morning, and casters make it easy to roll across a room.
What to know
Skip it if you want fast heat, a remote, or a light heater to carry between floors. The evidence rests on one hands-on review plus De'Longhi's specs.
Pros
- No fan noise or air movement
- 24-hour timer and child lock
- Tip-over switch and thermal cut-off
- 3-year warranty
- Sealed oil reservoir needs no refilling
Cons
- About 26 lb
- Slow to warm a room
- Faint odor on first burn-in
- Premium price, no remote

Dreo Solaris 718 (Tower Heater 718, DR-HSH008)
A 30-inch oscillating tower with a remote, timer and a 300 sq ft rating
Full product review →
A PTC ceramic tower heater with 120° oscillation, five heat levels, a digital thermostat, remote and 12-hour timer. Dreo rates it for 300 square feet.
Why we like it
Bob Vila's hands-on review found it raised a 216 sq ft room from 60°F to 70°F in under 30 minutes. CNN Underscored also named it its overall winner and said it suits larger rooms. Wide oscillation spreads heat across a living room instead of aiming it at one spot.
The thermostat works in 1°F steps from 41 to 95°F, and the remote, timer and child lock make it easy to run from the couch or bed. It has cool-touch housing and a plug that cuts power if it heats abnormally.
What to know
Skip it if you need lab-verified quiet operation or a long warranty: no lab has measured its noise and the warranty is one year.
Pros
- 120° oscillation spreads heat widely
- Remote, 12-hour timer and child lock
- Precise 1°F digital thermostat
- Cool-touch housing with a heat-sensing plug
- Highest coverage rating of the picks at 300 sq ft
Cons
- Only a 1-year warranty
- The 25 dB figure is Dreo's Eco-mode claim; high mode sounds like white noise
- Owners say the manual leaves some features unclear
- Fan-forced, so it circulates room dust

Vornado VH10 (2026, EH1-0241-06)
Consumer Reports' quietest space heater, at a budget price
Full product review →
A 1,500/750 W vortex fan heater with two heat settings and a mechanical thermostat dial. It circulates warm air around a whole room rather than blasting one spot.
Why we like it
Consumer Reports calls it the quietest space heater in its ratings and "a champ at heating a room," and it gave the VH10 top marks in its fire-safety test. For a budget price, you get a quiet fan heater backed by a long guarantee.
The controls are simple: two heat settings and a dial, which many bedroom users will prefer to a menu of buttons.
What to know
Skip it for open-plan spaces or if you want a remote, timer or digital display. It is best for medium-to-large enclosed bedrooms.
Pros
- Called the quietest heater in Consumer Reports' ratings
- Top marks in Consumer Reports' fire-safety test
- Tip-over and overheat shutoff, cool-touch case
- 5-year replacement guarantee
- Budget-friendly price
Cons
- Exhaust outlet can get hot, per Consumer Reports
- Mechanical dial, no timer or remote
- Vornado.com reviews average 3.9/5, with some complaints in larger rooms
- No safety listing is shown on Vornado's product page

Dreo Solaris Slim H3 (DR-HSH003)
A 4.6-pound remote-equipped heater you can carry from room to room
Full product review →
A slim 1,500 W oscillating PTC ceramic heater with a digital thermostat, ECO mode, a 12-hour timer and a remote. It weighs under 5 pounds.
Why we like it
Bob Vila named it Best Overall in its 2026 electric heater test. Testers said it had no problem warming spaces well beyond its 200 sq ft coverage rating, scored it 5/5 for performance and noise at 37.5 decibels, and found it lost less humidity than any other heater over three hours. Forbes Vetted also names it its best portable heater for large rooms.
At 4.6 lb with a remote and timer, it moves easily from a living room to a bedroom, at an inexpensive price.
What to know
Skip it as the sole heater in a truly large room: it is rated for only 200 sq ft, so it works best as supplemental heat. The warranty is 1 year.
Pros
- Measured at 37.5 dB by Bob Vila
- 1°F digital thermostat, 12-hour timer and remote
- Tip-over shutoff and 122°F overheat cutoff
- Slim, light body with 70° oscillation
- Budget-friendly price
Cons
- 1-year warranty
- Weaker in large rooms, per NBC Select
- Controls less intuitive than some rivals, per Bob Vila

How we review space heaters
PickMetric compares products by researching independent lab tests, hands-on reviews, manufacturer spec sheets and owner feedback. We weighed six criteria: noise and sleep-friendliness and safety (each 25%), heating performance (20%), bedroom usability and value (12% each) and health and materials (6%).
Noise and safety carry the most weight because large-room heaters often run for hours, and overnight. Heating performance rests on measured room temperature rise where it exists. Every pick was then challenged in a structured review, and scores were revised where the evidence was thin.
How We Picked
We started with 13 heaters and compared them using independent lab tests (TechGearLab, Consumer Reports), hands-on reviews (Bob Vila, Reviewed, CNN Underscored, Forbes Vetted), manufacturer spec sheets and owner feedback. Each was scored on noise and sleep-friendliness, safety, heating performance, bedroom usability, value, and health and materials.
Every pick was then challenged in a structured review before publication. That process changed the lineup. A Pelonis oil-filled radiator was dropped because its only endorsement could not be verified and its manual excerpts conflicted on whether it has a thermostat. The Lasko FH500 was also removed from the ranked picks on an editor's instruction.
Scores were revised too. The De'Longhi's safety score was lowered because no independent shutoff test exists for it, and the Solaris 718's noise score was lowered because its 25 dB figure is a manufacturer claim for Eco mode only. The review also made us state the physical limit plainly: no 1,500 W plug-in heater can be primary heat for a very large or open-plan space.
What to Look For
Be realistic about room size
Every plug-in heater here draws 1,500 watts and delivers about 5,100 BTU/h. As an editorial rule of thumb, that suits an enclosed room of roughly 250 to 400 square feet. Larger, open or drafty spaces call for supplemental use. Only some makers publish a coverage rating, so judge by tests and owner reports.
Fan or fanless
Fan heaters, such as the Vornado models and the Dreo towers, warm a room faster and move heat around, but they make noise. Oil-filled radiators are silent and steady but slow to start and heavy.
Controls that suit overnight use
A digital thermostat, timer and remote help in a bedroom. Auto modes like Vornado's Auto Climate hold a temperature without constant adjustment. A dimmable or dim display avoids a bright light at night.
Safety features
Look for tip-over shutoff, overheat protection, a cool-touch case and a plug that guards against overheating. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.
Warranty
Warranties in this guide run from 1 year (both Dreo models) to Vornado's 5-year replacement guarantee. For a heater you'll run all winter, longer coverage is worth weighing.
Health, Materials & Safety
Fan heaters circulate room air, and with it dust. If that bothers you, the fanless De'Longhi Dragon Digital does not blow dust, pollen or dander around, according to De'Longhi. Bob Vila noticed a faint smell during its burn-in that cleared within a few hours.
Humidity differs too. Bob Vila found the De'Longhi dried the air less than other heaters, and the Dreo Solaris Slim H3 kept more moisture in the room than any other heater it tested over three hours.
On safety, the Vornado AVH10 shut off in about 10 seconds in TechGearLab's covered-heater test with a 120°F sheet, the coolest result of 10 heaters. Consumer Reports gave the VH10 top marks in its fire-safety test. Neither Vornado model is part of the Vornado VH2/SRTH CPSC recalls. The Dreo Solaris 718 is ETL listed according to retailer listings. The De'Longhi's fins get hot, so keep children and pets away.
Other Space Heaters for Large Rooms We Considered
Dr. Infrared DR-968: marketed for large rooms, but it had the worst result in TechGearLab's covered-heater test, taking 11 minutes to shut off, with a grille that reached 245°F and warped. Its 5.4°F room rise also trailed the AVH10.
Pelonis PSHO06MR6ASB: dropped because there is no independent test and the available manual excerpts conflict on whether it has room temperature control.
Vornado TAVH10: the AVH10 platform with a remote and timer, but it was out of stock on Amazon at last check and has no independent test.
Vornado MVH: aimed at small-to-medium rooms. The VH10 has stronger Consumer Reports evidence at a lower price, and CR warns the MVH exhaust can burn on high.
Honeywell HCE840B: Reviewed rates it as a bedroom and spot heater and says it can be noisy.
Heat Storm HS-1500-PHX: rated for only 150 sq ft as primary heat, with a 1-year warranty.
De'Longhi HMP1500: no valid US listing and mixed owner results in big rooms.
FAQ
Can a space heater heat a very large room?
Not as primary heat. A 1,500 W plug-in heater produces about 5,100 BTU/h. These picks suit enclosed rooms of roughly 250 to 400 square feet (our rule of thumb) or work as supplemental heat in larger spaces.
Which is quietest?
The De'Longhi Dragon Digital is fanless and virtually silent. Among fan heaters, Consumer Reports calls the Vornado VH10 the quietest in its ratings.
Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight?
Models with tip-over and overheat shutoff are designed for unattended use, but keep them clear of bedding and curtains, plug them directly into a wall outlet and use a timer or thermostat where you can.
Fan heater or oil-filled radiator?
A fan heater warms a room faster. A radiator is quieter and gives steadier heat, but takes about 10 minutes to warm up and is heavy.
Do I need a remote?
It is a convenience, not a necessity. The Dreo models include one; the Vornado AVH10, VH10 and the De'Longhi do not.
Do these heaters cost a lot to run?
All draw up to 1,500 watts on high. A thermostat or Eco mode cycles the heater off when the room reaches temperature, which reduces running time.
Bottom line
For most large enclosed rooms, the Vornado AVH10 is the best balance of measured heating and safety results. Choose the De'Longhi Dragon Digital if silence matters most, the Dreo Solaris 718 if you want a remote and wide oscillation, and the Vornado VH10 if you want a quiet, inexpensive heater for a bedroom. Whatever you buy, match your expectations to 1,500 watts: these heaters warm enclosed rooms well, but they will not replace a furnace in a very large space.
