Sunrise Alarm Clocks

The Best Sunrise Alarm Clocks of 2026

The Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 gives the brightest, most adjustable sunrise, and five other lights suit different bedrooms and budgets.

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Our editorial rankings are maintained separately from retailer relationships.

A sunrise alarm clock brightens gradually before your wake-up time, so you come up to light instead of a blaring beep. The idea is simple. The products are not. Some are bright enough to fill a room, others barely glow at arm's length, and a few lock their best features behind an app or a subscription.

We compared six sunrise alarm clocks using independent light-meter measurements, reviews from major testers, manufacturer specs and owner feedback. Brightness at pillow distance counted most, followed by sound, ease of use and value.

The Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 came out on top for the brightest and most adjustable sunrise with no app. The Hatch Restore 3 is the better choice if you want a sound machine and a bedtime routine in one device. Philips and a budget Dreamegg model round out the lineup.

7.7 /10
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 Wake-up Light
Lowest verified price $169.00 at Amazon

A plug-in wake-up light from UK light-therapy specialist Lumie. It offers 15 to 90 minute sunrise and sunset settings, 15 sounds and FM radio.

Why we like it

Optimize Your Biology measured 730 lux at 1 foot and about 360 lux at 18 inches, the brightest traditional clock in its test. That matters because a sunrise is only useful if it is strong enough to register through closed eyelids.

It also has the widest sunrise and sunset range in this lineup, 15 to 90 minutes, and it works entirely from the device. Tom's Guide and NBC Select both recommend it. Lumie lists it as a Class I medical device under UK and EU rules.

What to know

Skip it if you want a simple menu or a 12-hour clock face. Owners and testers say the menu takes a few days to learn, and the display shows 24-hour time only.

Pros

  • Brightest traditional clock in independent light-meter testing
  • Sunrise and sunset from 15 to 90 minutes
  • 15 sounds plus FM radio
  • No app, Wi-Fi or subscription
  • 3-year warranty and 45-day trial when bought from Lumie

Cons

  • Menu takes days to learn
  • 24-hour time only
  • Flicker is in the risky band when dimmed
  • Premium price

Hatch Restore 3 Sunrise Alarm Clock, Sound Machine and Smart Light
Lowest verified price $169.99 at Amazon

A sunrise alarm, sound machine and smart light with 60+ sounds. The Restore 3 adds physical controls that work without a phone.

Why we like it

Testers name the Hatch best overall more often than any other sunrise clock, including Tom's Guide, NBC Select, Sleepopolis and Yahoo Health. The 60+ sound library and routine builder suit people who want to wind down as well as wake up.

Optimize Your Biology measured 610 lux at 1 foot and about 285 at 18 inches, with a 5 to 60 minute sunrise and clean flicker. Unlike the Restore 2, it has physical controls that work without a phone.

What to know

Skip it if you dislike apps, subscriptions or Wi-Fi-dependent devices. Much of the content sits behind Hatch+, and the warranty is only 1 year.

Pros

  • 60+ sounds and a routine builder
  • Physical controls that work without a phone
  • Clean flicker in independent testing
  • 5 to 60 minute sunrise
  • Frequently named best overall by testers

Cons

  • Needs Wi-Fi and the app
  • Full library requires Hatch+ at $49.99 a year
  • Dimmer than the Shine 300
  • 1-year warranty
  • Cannot play your own audio

Philips HF3520/60

A proven, app-free wake-up light at a mid price

Full product review →
7.4 /10
Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3520/60
Lowest verified price $124.99 at Amazon

A long-running Philips dawn simulator with colored sunrise and sunset, 20 brightness levels and FM radio. It needs no app.

Why we like it

Optimize Your Biology measured 570 lux at 1 foot and about 280 at 18 inches, almost the same as the Hatch Restore 3. The sunrise runs 20 to 40 minutes in 5-minute steps. It costs well under the Hatch and has no subscription.

It adds FM radio, tap snooze and a sunset mode. CNN Underscored, Popular Science and This Old House recommend it. Amazon sells it directly.

What to know

Skip it if you want a big sound library or care about flicker. It has only 5 sounds, and its flicker falls in the risky band in independent testing.

Pros

  • Brightness close to the Hatch's
  • No app or subscription
  • 20 to 40 minute sunrise plus sunset
  • FM radio and tap snooze
  • Mid-priced

#4 Best for Guided Wind-Down

Philips HF3650/60

A brighter Philips with guided breathing for winding down

Full product review →
7.2 /10
Philips SmartSleep Sleep and Wake-Up Light HF3650/60
Lowest verified price $199.99 at Amazon

Philips' step-up wake-up light, formerly sold as the Somneo. It adds RelaxBreathe light-guided breathing, FM radio and AUX input.

Why we like it

Optimize Your Biology measured 650 lux at 1 foot and about 325 at 18 inches, brighter than the HF3520. The sunrise runs 5 to 40 minutes. It has 7 wake sounds and 3 relaxation sounds.

The alarm keeps working for 8 hours in a power outage. Yahoo Health found it the easiest to set up, and it carries a 2-year warranty.

What to know

Skip it if you want a labeled menu or lower cost. The menu is icon-only, and it is priced near the Shine 300, which is brighter.

Pros

  • Brighter than the HF3520
  • RelaxBreathe guided breathing
  • 8-hour power-outage alarm backup
  • FM radio and AUX input
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Icon-only menu
  • Flicker in the risky band

#5 Best Mid-Price Lumie

Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150

A simpler, cheaper Lumie for smaller bedrooms

Full product review →
6.5 /10
Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150 Wake-up Light
Lowest verified price $139.00 at Amazon

Lumie's mid-range wake-up light with 20, 30 or 45 minute sunrise and sunset, 10 sounds and a night light. It has no radio and no app.

Why we like it

It brings Lumie's no-app design and sunrise and sunset to a lower price, with tap snooze, a night light and a 3-year warranty when bought direct. Sleepopolis liked its sunrise and sunset.

Optimize Your Biology measured 425 lux at 1 foot and placed it in its clean-flicker group, alongside the Hatch.

What to know

Skip it if you have a large bedroom or need strong light to wake. At 425 lux it is the dimmest measured light here, and it falls short of 250 lux at 18 inches. Sleepopolis also found setup unintuitive and the plastic build basic.

Pros

  • No app or subscription
  • Sunrise and sunset in 20, 30 or 45 minutes
  • Clean flicker in independent testing
  • 3-year warranty and 45-day trial when bought direct
  • Night light and tap snooze

Cons

  • Dimmest of the measured lights
  • No radio
  • Unintuitive setup
  • Basic plastic build

#6 Best Budget (provisional)

Dreamegg Sunrise 2

A budget sunrise and sound machine with no app

Full product review →
6.4 /10
Dreamegg Sunrise 2 Sunrise Alarm Clock & Sound Machine
Lowest verified price $49.99 at Amazon

An app-free, subscription-free sunrise alarm and sound machine with 29 sounds, 10 light colors and 20 brightness levels.

Why we like it

Tom's Guide reviewed it as "Brighter mornings at a budget-friendly price" and names it its best budget sunrise clock. The review says the sunrise runs up to 60 minutes and the light does "an excellent job of flooding dark bedrooms".

It costs under $50, has one-tap favorites and needs no app or subscription.

What to know

Skip it if brightness is your main concern. No independent lux or flicker measurement exists for this model, and Optimize Your Biology found the earlier Sunrise 1 gave under a quarter of the Hatch's light. This is a provisional pick.

Pros

  • Budget price
  • 29 sounds with one-tap favorites
  • Sunrise up to 60 minutes
  • No app or subscription
  • Tom's Guide's best budget pick

Cons

  • Brightness not independently measured
  • Only one alarm schedule at a time
  • Smaller sound library than the Hatch
  • Single review source

Our process

How we review sunrise alarm clocks

PickMetric's picks come from research, not hands-on testing. We compared 14 sunrise alarm clocks using independent light-meter results from Optimize Your Biology, reviews from Tom's Guide, NBC Select, Sleepopolis, Yahoo Health, CNN Underscored, Popular Science and This Old House, plus manufacturer spec sheets and owner feedback.

Each product was scored on seven criteria: sunrise light quality (30%), alarm and sound (15%), ease of use (15%), value including any subscription (15%), features (10%), reliability and build (10%) and health and materials (5%). Light quality carries the most weight because a dim sunrise defeats the purpose. Every pick was then challenged in a structured review before publication.

How We Picked

We started with 14 sunrise alarm clocks and compared them using independent light-meter results, reviews from nine publications, manufacturer specs and owner feedback. We did not test them hands-on.

Each product was scored on seven weighted criteria, with sunrise light quality counting for 30%. Measured brightness at pillow distance came mainly from Optimize Your Biology, which tested many of these clocks with a light meter.

Every pick was then challenged before publication, and the review changed the lineup. The Lumie Glow 150's light score was cut because its measured 425 lux is the lowest of the measured lights here, and its award was renamed from a low-flicker label to Best Mid-Price Lumie. The Philips HF3520's sunrise was corrected to a 20 to 40 minute range, and the Shine 300 advice now points buyers to Lumie direct to keep its warranty and trial. The Dreamegg was kept but labeled provisional because its brightness has not been measured.

What to Look For

Brightness

This matters most. Light-meter readings at pillow distance separate strong sunrise clocks from weak ones. Among the lights here, 18-inch readings run from about 280 to 360 lux. Bigger rooms and heavier sleepers need the brighter end.

Sunrise length

Most people do well with 20 to 40 minutes. The Shine 300 goes up to 90 minutes, and the Hatch up to 60, if you want a slower ramp.

App and subscription

The Hatch needs Wi-Fi and the app, and its full library needs a Hatch+ subscription. The Lumie and Philips models work entirely from the device.

Sounds and radio

If you want a sound machine, the Hatch (60+) and Dreamegg (29) lead. If you want radio, choose the Shine 300 or either Philips.

Warranty

Lumie offers 3 years and a 45-day trial on direct purchases. Philips lists 2 years on the HF3650. Hatch gives 1 year.

Health, Materials & Safety

Flicker is one measurable difference. Optimize Your Biology put the Hatch Restore 3 and Lumie Glow 150 in its clean-flicker group. It put the Philips HF3520 and HF3650 in the IEEE 1789 risky band, and found the Shine 300 fine at full brightness but flickering at about 200 Hz when dimmed. If flicker bothers you, the Hatch and Glow 150 are the safer choices.

Lumie lists the Shine 300 as a Class I medical device under UK and EU rules. That is a registration status, not a claim about health outcomes.

Hatch's 2024 power-adapter recall applied to the first-generation Hatch Rest baby sound machine, not the Restore line.

Other Sunrise Alarm Clocks We Considered

The Philips Hue Twilight was the best light in Optimize Your Biology's test, with about 840 lux at 1 foot and clean flicker. It has no audio alarm, needs a Hue Bridge for full features and costs far more. It suits Hue households that already use a separate alarm.

The Lumie Bodyclock Luxe 700FM costs more than the Shine 300 yet measured 380 lux at 1 foot, far below the Shine 300's 730.

The Casper Glow and Loftie Smart Lamp are dim in independent testing, and the Loftie has only a 9-minute ramp. The WiiM Wake-Up Light had Wi-Fi drop-outs that erased alarms in Yahoo Health's test.

The Reacher wood-grain model lacks a light measurement, and a sibling Reacher measured only 285 lux at 1 foot. The JALL was out of stock on Amazon and testers flagged its cheap build. The Hatch Sleep Clock is sold only on hatch.co, and Tom's Guide says its premium over the Restore 3 isn't justified for sunrise use.

FAQ

Do sunrise alarm clocks really work?

Many users find waking to gradual light more pleasant than a sudden alarm. Results vary, and a dim clock will help less than a bright one.

How bright should a sunrise alarm clock be?

Brighter is better for the purpose. Among the measured lights here, the Shine 300 is brightest at about 360 lux at 18 inches. The Glow 150 is the dimmest and suits smaller rooms.

Do I need an app?

Only for the Hatch Restore 3, which needs Wi-Fi and the app for setup and content, though it now has physical controls. The Lumie and Philips models need no app.

Is the Hatch subscription required?

No, but the full sound and light library and new content require Hatch+ at $49.99 a year after the 30-day trial.

Where should I buy the Shine 300?

From Lumie. The price matches Amazon's, and Lumie describes the 3-year warranty and 45-day trial for direct purchases. The Amazon listing is from a third-party seller.

Is the cheap Dreamegg good enough?

Tom's Guide recommends it as a budget pick, but its brightness has not been independently measured. Treat it as a low-cost starting point.

Bottom line

For most people, the Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 is the best sunrise alarm clock: it is the brightest, it has the widest range of sunrise lengths, and it needs no app. Buy the Hatch Restore 3 if you want sounds and a routine in one device and accept the app. The Philips HF3520 is the sensible mid-priced choice with no subscription. Choose the Dreamegg only if budget comes first and you accept that its brightness has not been independently measured.
