The Best Plastic-Free / Non-Toxic Drip Coffee Makers of 2026
Five drip brewers, from fully glass-and-steel machines to a bisphenol-free plastic benchmark, ranked by how little touches your hot water and coffee.
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. Our editorial rankings are maintained separately from retailer relationships.
Most automatic drip coffee makers push near-boiling water through plastic tubing, a plastic reservoir and a plastic basket. If you would rather your coffee touch glass, stainless steel and silicone, the field narrows fast.
A few brands now build around that idea. This guide ranks five options: three automatic machines with a glass-and-stainless hot path, one manual glass brewer that costs a fraction of the rest, and one well-regarded machine that still uses plastic but discloses it as bisphenol- and phthalate-free.
Each pick is labeled for what it is. Where plastic remains, we say where. Where a claim comes only from the manufacturer, we say that too.

SimplyGoodCoffee THE BREWER - Plastic-Free (1st Gen), 8-Cup
A one-button 8-cup brewer with glass and stainless steel on every wet surface.
Full product review →
An automatic 8-cup drip brewer with a borosilicate glass reservoir and carafe and a 304 stainless flow path. The maker states that no plastic or aluminum touches water or coffee.
Why we like it
SimplyGoodCoffee lists a glass reservoir and carafe, a 304 stainless shower head, basket and boiler, and medical-grade silicone seals. Even the cold-water tank is glass, which is not true of the Ratio Eight. It brews at 195-205°F and is listed to the Gold Cup / SCA standard.
Tom's Guide tested this generation and called it a fantastic Moccamaster alternative. Unlike the Chemex, it needs no kettle and controls temperature for you. It comes with a 5-year warranty, so register it with the brand and keep your receipt.
What to know
Skip it if you want a delay timer or need a removable reservoir. Tom's Guide also notes it is only mostly plastic-free, since the exterior is plastic and the tubing is silicone.
Pros
- Glass reservoir, carafe and stainless hot path
- One-button operation, no kettle needed
- Brews at 195-205°F and is listed to Gold Cup / SCA standard
- 5-year warranty
- Recommended by many independent plastic-free guides
Cons
- No delay timer
- Reservoir is not removable, and bumping the drip-stop can cause overflow (Bob Vila)
- Exterior is plastic and tubing is silicone
- Brand makes no PFAS statement

Chemex CM-6A Classic 6-Cup
The cheapest truly plastic-free brew path, if you will pour by hand.
Full product review →
A one-piece borosilicate glass flask with a wood collar and leather tie, used with paper filters. It needs a kettle and uses no electricity.
Why we like it
Nothing in the brew path is plastic or metal. There are no electronics to fail or throw away. It costs roughly a ninth of the SimplyGoodCoffee Brewer. Sustainably Kind Living, Interior Medicine and Nontoxic Nook all recommend it.
If you need more than about 30 oz, the 8-cup CM-8A is the same design in a larger size.
What to know
Skip it if you want push-button brewing. Brew temperature depends entirely on your technique, and it has no SCA certification.
Pros
- Fully plastic-free brew path
- Budget price
- No electricity or electronics
- Same-design 8-cup size available
Cons
- Needs a kettle and some technique
- Glass is breakable
- No temperature control or certification
- Warranty does not cover breakage

Ratio Eight Series 2 (glass carafe)
Glass water lines and a stainless basket, for a premium price.
Full product review →
A design-led automatic brewer that gives pour-over-style brewing through hand-blown borosilicate glass lines. The only plastic in the water path is the cold-water tank.
Why we like it
Ratio says hot water runs through borosilicate glass lines to a stainless shower head and double-wall stainless basket, then into a borosilicate carafe. The Filtery calls it the lowest-plastic automatic coffee maker it found.
The cold-water tank is Eastman Tritan TX2001, which Ratio says never touches hot water. It has a 5-year warranty.
What to know
Skip it if you want zero plastic anywhere in the machine, or if the price is a stretch. Our coffee-quality score is an estimate based on the design, since we found no SCA certification, temperature measurement or independent taste test for this model.
Pros
- Glass water lines and stainless basket
- Borosilicate glass carafe
- Named polymer disclosed for the tank
- 5-year warranty
Cons
- Premium price
- Tritan cold-water tank and polymer base
- Glass lines are fragile
- Carafe and dripper are not dishwasher-safe

Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select (e.g., 53925)
The proven benchmark, with plastic that is disclosed as bisphenol- and phthalate-free.
Full product review →
A handmade Dutch 10-cup drip brewer with a glass carafe, certified by SCA and ECBC. It is not plastic-free.
Why we like it
The brew basket and reservoir are plastic. Moccamaster discloses that plastic as BPA-, BPS-, BPF- and phthalate-free, and Interior Medicine notes it is EU food-safe. Only cold water touches the reservoir.
It brews at 196-205°F and is a top pick at Reviewed, Tom's Guide and TechRadar. The 5-year warranty comes with repair for the life of the brewer, which is the strongest repairability story here.
What to know
Skip it if your goal is no plastic touching hot coffee. The basket does.
Pros
- SCA and ECBC certified
- Strong reviews from major testers
- 5-year warranty plus lifetime repair
- Sold directly by Amazon
- Clear disclosure of plastic type
Cons
- Plastic brew basket and reservoir
- Not programmable
- Glass carafe sits on a hotplate with auto-off at 100 minutes
- Advises against reverse-osmosis or distilled water

Caraway 10-Cup Coffee Maker (Clean Brew System)
A 10-cup glass-and-stainless brewer, but you have to pre-order and wait.
Full product review →Caraway's one-dial automatic drip brewer launched in September 2026. It is sold direct and ships in batches.
Why we like it
Caraway lists a glass reservoir, a stainless water path, shower head and brew basket, a reusable stainless filter and a glass carafe, and says no plastic touches your coffee. Sustainably Kind Living, Interior Medicine, Nontoxic Nook and Organic Authority rank it highly.
Caraway cites California AB1200 compliance with a linked third-party test page. It is the largest-capacity plastic-free automatic here.
What to know
Skip it if you need coffee soon. Batch 4 is estimated to ship January 26. The plastic-free claims come from the manufacturer, and independent lab or taste testing has not been published yet.
Pros
- 10-cup capacity
- Glass reservoir and carafe, stainless path and filter
- Reusable stainless filter means no paper
- Strong placement in plastic-free roundups
Cons
- About three months to ship
- 2-year warranty

How we review coffee makers
PickMetric compared products using independent reviews, manufacturer spec sheets and disclosures, and owner and roundup feedback from sources such as Tom's Guide, Bob Vila, Reviewed, TechRadar, The Filtery, Interior Medicine and Nontoxic Nook. We did not test the machines ourselves.
Scores weighted six criteria: plastic-free brew path (25%), coffee quality (25%), value (15%), durability and repairability (13%), ease of use and cleaning (12%), and health and materials transparency (10%). The brew path and coffee quality carry the most weight because this guide is about what touches the water and whether the result is still a good cup.
How We Picked
We researched across independent tests, manufacturer spec sheets and disclosures, and owner and roundup feedback. We did not run hands-on tests. Sources included Tom's Guide, Bob Vila, Reviewed, TechRadar, TechGearLab, The Filtery, Interior Medicine, Nontoxic Nook, Remodelista, Organic Authority and a CPSC recall search. We looked at 12 products.
Every pick was then challenged in a structured review before publication, and the lineup changed as a result. The Moccamaster's plastic-free score was cut because its hot-coffee basket is plastic, and it moved to last place with a label that says so. Ratio's coffee-quality score was lowered and marked as an estimate because no independent brewing data exists for the Series 2. Caraway was added after the review argued it fit the focus better than some excluded options. A bare Hario ceramic dripper was dropped because it is not a coffee maker.
The score weights favor the brew path and coffee quality, since a plastic-free machine that brews poorly is not much use.
What to Look For
The full brew path
Check every part that touches hot water or coffee: reservoir, heater and tubing, shower head, basket, carafe and lid. Manufacturers often say plastic-free while meaning only the basket and carafe. Look for a part-by-part list.
Cold-water plastic versus hot-coffee plastic
Plastic in a cold-water tank is a smaller concern than a plastic basket that holds hot coffee. The Ratio Eight has the first; the Moccamaster has both a plastic reservoir and basket.
Brew temperature
The SCA range is 195-205°F. Many cheap machines fall short. Certified or tested machines are a safer bet. Manual brewers leave temperature to you.
Warranty and repairability
Glass breaks. Look for a long warranty, available replacement parts and, ideally, a repair program. Moccamaster offers repair for the life of the brewer.
Where you buy
Some brands limit warranty coverage by seller. Chemex covers Amazon purchases only from its own seller account, and SimplyGoodCoffee asks for proof of purchase or registration. Keep your receipt.
Convenience
If you want a timer, a dishwasher-safe carafe or a removable tank, check for them. Several plastic-free machines skip these features.
Health, Materials & Safety
The picks use borosilicate glass, 304 stainless steel and silicone for parts that touch water and coffee. Borosilicate glass is the type used for labware.
Disclosure quality varies. Moccamaster names its plastic as BPA-, BPS-, BPF- and phthalate-free, and Ratio names the Tritan polymer in its tank. SimplyGoodCoffee, Ratio and Chemex make no PFAS statement on the product pages we reviewed. Caraway cites California AB1200 compliance with a linked third-party test page.
Our CPSC search found no recent recalls for Moccamaster. A fully plastic-free path remains the most direct way to avoid plastic contact, but this guide makes no medical claims. Consider unbleached paper filters with the Chemex, or a reusable stainless filter such as Caraway's.
Repairability also reduces waste. Moccamaster's lifetime repair is the best here, and the Chemex has no electronics to replace.
Other Plastic-Free / Non-Toxic Drip Coffee Makers We Considered
SimplyGoodCoffee Brewer 2nd Gen Programmable: Same stated materials as the Brewer, with a 24-hour timer. It is sold direct, but its Amazon listing is out of stock and independent tests so far cover the 1st Gen.
Ratio Six Series 2: Out of stock on Amazon. A BPA-free polymer liner touches hot coffee as shipped, and TechGearLab measured an average brew temperature below the SCA range.
Aarke Coffee Maker: Its basket is lined with plastic, and Aarke does not fully say which parts are plastic. The Moccamaster is better disclosed and more repairable.
Bunn VP17-1SS: A commercial unit that ships with a plastic funnel and no decanter, with a 2-year warranty.
Chemex CM-8A: The same design as the CM-6A in a 40 oz size.
Pure Over Signature Brew Kit: Holds only 1-3 cups and is not sold on Amazon.
Hario V60 Ceramic Dripper: A bare dripper with no carafe, and no published glaze disclosure.
FAQ
Is any drip coffee maker truly 100 percent plastic-free?
Not quite. Even the best automatic machines have a plastic exterior or base, and silicone seals or tubing. The Chemex is the only pick with no plastic in the brew device itself.
Is the Moccamaster safe if it has plastic parts?
Moccamaster says its plastic is BPA-, BPS-, BPF- and phthalate-free. It is still plastic, and the basket touches hot coffee. It is the right choice only if you accept that.
Do plastic-free machines make good coffee?
They can. The SimplyGoodCoffee Brewer is listed to the Gold Cup / SCA standard and brews at 195-205°F, and Tom's Guide tested it favorably. The Ratio Eight and Caraway lack independent brewing data.
Why not buy the cheapest option?
The Chemex is the cheapest, and it works well, but you need a kettle and a steady pour. Automatic machines cost much more for convenience and temperature control.
Will the warranty cover me if I buy on Amazon?
It depends on the seller. Chemex covers Amazon purchases only from its own seller account. SimplyGoodCoffee asks for proof of purchase or registration, so keep your receipt and register the machine.
How do I descale a glass-and-stainless machine?
Follow the maker's instructions. Moccamaster advises descaling every 100 cycles or three months and warns against reverse-osmosis or distilled water.
Bottom line
For most people who want an automatic machine with nothing but glass, stainless steel and silicone on the hot path, the SimplyGoodCoffee Brewer is the strongest all-round choice. If budget matters more than convenience, the Chemex gives you a fully plastic-free path for a small fraction of the price. Choose the Ratio Eight for design and glass water lines, the Caraway if you need 10 cups and can wait, and the Moccamaster only if proven brewing and lifetime repair matter more to you than zero plastic.
